Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with True Care

May 14, 2021

With the pandemic affecting the world so profusely last year, it shed light on how vital those in the healthcare profession truly are. If it were not for these dedicated professionals risking their lives for others, we would not be in the position that we are in today, and the hope for a brighter tomorrow would be nothing but a distant dream.

Nurses are a crucial part of the healthcare team, a bridge between the doctor and the patient. They are compassionate, understanding, and nonjudgmental yet firm and grounded.

Home care is providing a new approach to health care. Due to the pandemic, clients that need home care are wary of putting themselves at risk in a hospital. A safer option would be to receive care in a Nursing Home. However, many do not want to lose themselves or their sense of independence. Home care allows you to get the care you need, without losing who you are in the process.

Our Private Duty Nursing program provides care to people who are ventilator dependent, have tracheostomy tubes, gastrostomy tubes, or require wound care. Patients rely on Licensed Practical Nurses for at-home care, and True Care is dedicated to providing this care with empathy and compassion.

To become an LPN in the state of New York, you must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (no college degree required)
  • Graduate from a nursing education program acceptable to NYS
  • Complete New York State Required Infection Control Coursework and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

There are countless schools throughout New York City in which you can obtain your nursing certification, ranging from Colleges to Adult Learning Centers. The duration of the classes can range from 6-18 months, depending on the school you choose.

Once you become an LPN, you are ready to start with True Care immediately! We have cases available in all five boroughs, 7 days a week, in shifts that range from 6-12 hours. If you decide to take on a case that is unfamiliar to you (i.e. you’ve never worked with clients on ventilators before) we can provide you with the proper training to help you feel comfortable and confident to provide that type of care.

After you express your interest in joining our nursing team, a recruiter will send you an electronic application to complete, along with a list of our required documents. The application itself should not take long to complete.

Here is a list of our required documents:

  • Unexpired ID
  • Social Security Card
  • Nursing License or Registration Certificate
  • CPR Certification
  • Liability/Malpractice Insurance
  • Resume
  • 2 Reference Letters
  • Proof of Address (Acceptable forms of proof of address include: utility bill, rent or mortgage bill, cable bill, bank statement)
  • Physical (not older than 6 months)
  • 7-Panel Drug Screen (not older than 6 months)
  • Proof of MMR Immunization OR proof of immunity to Rubella/Rubeola Lab Report (not older than 10 years)
  • Two-step PPD or Quantiferon Gold/T-Spot (not older than 1 year)
  • If PPD is Positive: Chest X-Ray (not older than 10 years) and Proof of Positive PPD
  • Flu Vaccine or Flu Vaccine Declination Form

It typically takes a few days for our recruitment team to process all of your documents. If you require assistance, we can help you along the way with everything from scheduling your physical, to recommending locations you can contact to receive your malpractice insurance. After processing your documents, our Compliance Manager will reach out to you to schedule your (paid!) online orientation. After that, you are ready to start!

Here at True Care, we greatly value our Licensed Practical Nurses because without them our clients wouldn't be able to receive the care they need in order to live the life they deserve. We are eager to welcome you aboard our team! If you are interested in applying with us, please feel free to reach out to me at amisserello@truecareny.com or you can call me directly at (929)-454-1117.

We look forward to hearing from you!
